Bristol City SHOCK West Ham to reach fourth round of FA Cup

16 Jan 2024

Bristol City produced an incredible result to knock out 10-man West Ham United as a third-minute strike from Tommy Conway gave the Championship side a 1-0 win in a third-round FA Cup replay.

The Bristol City forward capitalised on a poor backpass from Konstantinos Mavropanos to reach the ball before Lukasz Fabianski and then skip round the West Ham goalkeeper to slot into an empty net.

It took West Ham time to control the contest, but eventually they settled and Danny Ings had the first opportunity after he spun away from a Bristol City defender and shot just wide of the left post from the edge of the box.

Maxwel Cornet then sent his acrobatic effort wide from close range and Ings scuffed his shot wide.

West Ham’s task to avoid an upset became much tougher when Said Benrahma was given a straight red card for kicking Joe Williams in the 51st minute.

David Moyes, making his return to the club he used to play for from 1985 to 1987, still saw his West Ham side still dominate possession but were unable to test Max O’Leary in Bristol City’s goal.

After the match, Moyes spoke of joy being back in Bristol as his West Ham side fail to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup for the first time since 2017.

“I love coming back into Bristol,” Moyes told the club’s official website.

“I know the city really well and I had some really good times here during my career, but just not tonight.”

Bristol City, meanwhile, could be up against Premier League opposition again if Nottingham Forest are able to beat Blackpool tomorrow night.
